**About the role** We are looking for our first Director of Engineering to lead product delivery and our team of ~ 10 engineers (consisting of frontend, backend, cloud, and data engineers). You will be part of our leadership team and directly report to our Founders Robin and Michael, while representing our product development team for customers and investors. You will be setting the right culture and processes in our engineering team and will be responsible for developing, hiring, and retaining our engineering talent. **The product:** We are pioneering a new way to securely share data across companies. The Apheris Platform is an end-to-end platform for Data Scientists to collaboratively analyze distributed data in a privacy-preserving way. Our high-profile enterprise customers have the highest requirements for security and IP protection, and we apply our technology and services to some of the world’s most impactful use cases that have very sensitive and valuable data. In the role of Director of Engineering, you will genuinely impact the way the world securely shares and interacts with data. **Our** **situation:** Apheris is growing at an astounding pace! We are an impact-driven company, and we are searching for someone who can scale this impact. **What you will do** * Lead a high-performing, cross-functional team of engineers including backend, frontend, DevOps/cloud, QA, and data engineering. * Lead the design and architecture of major software components, systems, and features. Derive technical requirements and manage technical debt in a high-growth environment. * Define the technical roadmap for building products and empower our teams to deliver these plans on time, on budget, and with the highest quality performance. * Hire, grow, and develop our engineering team as the company evolves and scales. This includes ensuring mentorship, coaching, feedback, and maintaining and building effective hiring practices into the team’s operations. * Provide a consistent and successful interface between engineering and product management. * Manage team deliverables through agile methodologies and propose enhancements to improve workflows and elevate efficiency and delivery excellence. * Jump in and mediate bottlenecks hands-on – including leading decision-making about technical architecture, code reviews, etc. **You should apply if** * A demonstrated track-record of building and managing best-in-class engineering teams, including direct experience with performance management, hiring practices, and development practices. * Multiple years of hands-on development experience – you are a software engineer at heart and can lead technical discussions on every level across stakeholders. * Demonstrated experience collaborating with product and engineering leadership to translate product objectives to delivery strategy and ensure priorities and expectations are both aligned and are realistic. * A strong grasp of programming’s best-practices (e.g., code clarity, documentation, git workflows) and experience with cloud infrastructure and cloud-native application development, including Docker containers, preferably on AWS. * A passion for relentlessly striving to push toward best practices and team goals while being flexible in a fast-paced startup environment. * Experience working in an environment with multiple programming languages (we use Python for most of our products and JavaScript (Vue) for Frontend) and previous hands-on experience with AWS or other cloud platforms (e.g., GCP, Azure) and development of internal, and external APIs. * Great leadership skills with demonstrated experience of taking on a lead role in a team of engineers and data scientists, preferably in an agile Scrum setting. You should be able to confidently take ownership of a problem, gather ideas to solve it, and convey your approach efficiently. * Based in a European time zone. **Bonus points if** * You have expert coding skills in Python. * You have expert skills with AWS services and cloud-native application development on AWS – including AWS services such as EC2, VPC, Step Functions, CloudWatch, CloudTrail, container services, such as ECR, ECS, EKS, as well as infrastructure as code via CloudFormation and CDK. * You have experience with Python data analysis frameworks (e.g., Pandas, Numpy) and machine learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, Tensorflow, scikit-learn). * You have experience in developing enterprise-grade software for large B2B products. * You have experience building distributed or federated systems. * You are based in Berlin or Germany.
