Is it also Python that you teach in class?

What a great idea! I'm Sebastian, living in Aachen, Germany. I also work with Python for about a decade now.

Sure they could and the "you are not Facebook" claim is not meant to discourage anyone to work on ambitious projects. Technically speaking, most experience shows that there is such thing as premature optimization. Or, put in other words: Even if you expect enormous growth, start with a simple implementation. Even the biggest success stories did not come over night.

Yes, I do. I'm a bit behind my time schedule.

What have your experiences been with running a community like this?

It uses Model Inheritance: https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/2.1/topics/db/models/#model-inheritance This is generally not considered a best practice. I used it, however, because PN initially started as an idea for a Django course and I wanted this topic to be covered.

For most projects: "You are not Facebook" (https://hackernoon.com/you-are-not-google-you-are-not-netflix-qf1v3sj5). While the approach of Instagram mentioned in this blog post is certainly interesting, for most project, you should be fine using just UUIDs or if you need monotonic increasing IDs, just AUTO_INCREMENT (MySQL) or Sequences (Postgres).

Completely true. However, the primary goal of this site is about sharing links and fostering discussions about it. So I thought that sharing a link about a shared link is so uncommon that UUIDs might be good enough.

It's using Django's UUIDField (https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/2.2/ref/models/fields/#uuidfield). Behind the scenes, UUID4 are generated with Python's builtin uuid module. The whole point of using UUIDs is that it does not require checking for uniqueness. See for example here: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/1155008/how-unique-is-uuid

I don't think the backend technology is important here. It's more about finding a way to improve frontend matters.

To be honest, I asked myself the same question when I started. I haven't found a solution, yet. Will think about it when it happens ;-)

Me too! The channels thing felt a bit like "batteries not included". So let's see how this will change…

Not yet, but Guido said that it'll be jus the version after 3.9 - it will be less incompatible to 3 as 3 was to 2
